An Interview with Cheryl Magee and Mary Ambrose of the United Way for Greater New Orleans Faith-Based Initiative

Cheryl Magee

Cheryl Magee is the United Way for the Greater New Orleans Area's director of Faith-Based Initiatives, a program created in May 2007 to engage, develop and organize the work of faith-based organizations in efforts to rebuild New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

Magee, who has 18 years of experience organizing and operating faith-based and community organization programs in cooperation with government and private nonprofit entities, has served as director since February. A New Orleans native whose home was damaged three years ago by Hurricane Katrina, Magee worked for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) after the storm to provide disaster relief. She still serves as a volunteer agency liaison to FEMA. Magee also serves as a faith-based and community organization representative on the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) National Advisory Committee on Job Corps, established to advance the Corps' emphasis on student achievement for high-growth employment.

She has served as guest speaker and panelist for HUD, DOL, and the White House Conference on Faith-Based & Community Initiatives, on how faith-based organizations can successfully partner with government in a collaborative effort.

Mary Ambrose is senior vice president of Community Impact at United Way for the Greater New Orleans Area. In that capacity, she is responsible for fund distribution for the Greater New Orleans office as well as the Tangipahoa and St. Tammany parish offices. She is a licensed graduate social worker and has more than 13 years experience in social services. She has worked with the United Way for the past 10 years.

Ambrose's New Orleans residence was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, and she was forced to live for four months on a cruise ship - "not great conditions," she said - provided for refugees of the storm.
